OneBit Berzerk (Playdate) for Windows

A remake of a classic arcade game

OneBit Berzerk (Playdate) is a free action title made by indie developer oscarbraindead. It is a retro top-down shooter inspired by the classic arcade game, Berzerk, that came out back in the 1980s.

Similar to OneBit PacMan (Playdate) and OneBit Invaders (Playdate), OneBit Bezerk (Playdate) is a game made specifically for the retro gaming handheld, the Playdate. It also takes inspiration from classic titles for its design and gameplay. It offers a similar experience that any owner of the portable console can enjoy.

Gone berserk

Berzerk was a classic top-down shoot 'em up game in which players control a robot as they navigate maze-like levels, facing various dangers in their path. Other robots will come at them with lasers, but they can fight back with their own weapon. There are also electrocuted walls that will destroy you on contact, as well as their nemesis named Evil Otto, which will continuously be on the chase.

Fast-forward to today, and if you own a Playdate retro handheld, you get to play the classic with OneBit Berzerk (Playdate). This reimagined title introduces some design tweaks to the original with more detailed character models and levels that feature grid-like layouts. All of this is rendered in the console's signature monochrome color scheme to provide an even more retro vibe and presentation.

This game features two game modes. The first is the Classic Mode similar to the original gameplay. Meanwhile, the New Mode introduces three robot types, randomly changing wall layouts, and powerups from defeated enemies. With all of this being said and as is usually the case with these types of games, a playthrough will be highly variable, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours.

A great reimagining

If you played the original Berzerk game in arcades back in the day and own a Playdate, you can now experience playing all over again with OneBit Berzerk (Playdate). The gameplay will be just like you remember it, with some nice additions like the visual design tweaks and a new game mode that enhance the overall gameplay. This is an easy recommendation and worth checking out.
